A Recent MY WAY NEWS Article (Link Here) gives us the second glimpse of Gov. Romney crying within the last week…
“LONDONDERRY, N.H. (AP) – Mitt Romney’s eyes filled with tears Monday as the Republican presidential contender recalled watching the casket of a soldier killed in Iraq return to the United States and imagined if it were one of his five sons. “The gravity of the War in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere, coupled with the boundless heroism of our troops is nothing to take lightly. And I don’t mean to question Gov. Romney’s intentions, but I just do not believe the guy. Not that I don’t believe that he was moved by the site of the casket, rather, I question turning on the waterworks during a presidential campaign. Never in my life have I seen a presidential candidate tear up so much. In his convention speech in 2004, President Bush was evidently choking up when discussing the service of our troops. That I believe.
But when a Presidential Candidate who has been accused of being “plastic” wells up twice in one week…without having done so in public life before, you have to admit, the cynicism isn’t unjustified. (Click this Link for the Video of Mitt tearing up on Meet the Press.)
But I’m not done with the Governor from Massachusetts just yet. The same article notes something profoundly mornic…
“It was a counterbalance to a moment earlier this year, when Romney told a woman in Iowa that his grown sons – none of whom has served in the military – were serving the country by helping with his campaign. Romney later apologized for the remark, saying it was wrong to equate military service with campaign involvement.”
(jaw drops)
His sons are helping the country by helping with his campaign? Who edits this guy’s speeches?
Mitt was apparently questioned about his newfound Gift of the Holy Spirit, to which he responded…
“During a news conference afterward, Romney defended the tears, which came a day after he similarly choked up on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” He did so while recalling the relief he felt after the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Mormon church of which he is a member, granted full privileges to blacks in 1978. ‘I’m a normal person, I have emotions,” Romney told reporters. “I have emotion just like anyone else. I’m not ashamed of that at all.”
Good. I’m glad. I’ll be honest, perhaps I am being harsh on Mitt. But I can’t help it. He has so much potential, yet, he adds nothing to this primary. Ever since Huck overtook his campaign it has seemed to me that his campaign has become completely desparate, transparent, and not well thought out.
Cnn.com recently chronicled Gov. Romney’s latest brilliant attempt to stop the bleeding in Iowa (Link Here)…
“With pictures of the two candidates on the screen, the ad’s announcer says that “Romney got tough on drugs like meth” and that “he never pardoned a single criminal.” The announcer goes on to say Huckabee “granted 1,033 pardons and commutations, including 12 convicted murderers. Huckabee granted more clemencies than the previous three governors combined. Even reduced penalties for manufacturing methamphetamine.” The announcer closes with “on crime the difference is judgment.”
Compelling arguments right? WRONG! Huck’s response was telling, “The difference between us is that I did something he never had to do. I carried out the death penalty 16 times, more than any other governor in my state’s history,” Huckabee said.
Add to that a little fact checking and Romney’s ad looks even more desparate…
“The statistics cited in Romney’s ad come from a recent Associated Press examination of Huckabee’s record of commutations and pardons. Huckabee received more commutation and pardon requests than Romney did and rejected 78 percent of them, according to The Washington Post.”
While the counter argument to Gov. Romney’s claims may or may not be weak when viewing the total picture, from a PR perspective, it is a pretty tough pill to swallow to say that the person who executed more people than any other Governor in his state’s history…is soft on crime.
Mitt’s lack of a coherent response to the rise of Huckabee makes me think he would make for a bad general election candidate with the pressure on. I wish he would drop out so Fred, Huck and McCain could battle it out to save us from Rudy.
